Withdrawal of Troops – 2002

Chairman of the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC) and Chief Secretary to the government, Robert Igara, said, in a statement on February 1, 2002, that the government had received a brief from the Defense Force commander, Peter Ilau, on the future phased withdrawal of troops and that further discussions will be necessary at the National Security Advisory Committee NSAC -level among relevant agencies. He said the Defence Force had begun preliminary arrangements to facilitate a future phased withdrawal consistent with all agreements relating to Bougainville, including weapons disposal.¹
